UMBC women’s basketball player Kiara Bell joined me on the show this week! A native of Santa Rosa, California, Kiara had an unsettled childhood. She moved around a lot growing up, living in California, Florida, and spending high school in New Jersey. A very closed off person growing up, Kiara emotionally talked about how important her peers were to her. A late bloomer to the game of basketball, Bell didn’t start playing until the 8th grade, when her mom recognized her height would be an asset.
Her recruiting process was short indeed, with LIU (Long Island University) quickly acknowledging her. They had a plan for her and made her feel like family, and that was everything she wanted in a program. Fitting very well in New York, the city and family environment felt wholesome, and she was placed with a very busy schedule. Fully devoted to the game, her teammates installed a “basketball” mindset inside of her, and she has quickly developed her game in every aspect. Now at UMBC, transferring from LIU, the transition was scary, Bell said, but the community, school, and coaches made her feel important, and she has adapted well.
Kiara wanted to give this advice, “Do not let anyone try to hold you back. If you think you can do it, you wholeheartedly can, and if you fail, try again, and believe in yourself”. Remember the name, Kiara Bell, indefinitely. Kiara brought honesty, happiness, and wisdom to the show, and I can’t express my gratitude to her enough for that. A really bright future, and we’re pulling for you! Job well done!! Enjoy the episode, everyone! God bless.
