Rick Cleveland, sports columnist for Mississippi Today, joined me on the show this week! A native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Rick grew up surrounded by sports journalism. His father, Ace Cleveland, is a member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame for writing. Beginning his career very early, at age 13, Rick himself took the initiative contacting the Hattiesburg American newspaper. Not fearing anything at all, Rick felt very confident about his ability to read, write, and talk about sports.

One of the things Rick mentioned that I myself try to advocate as well, is to do something you love, because most of the time it won’t ever actually feel like work. Starting to work at such a young age, Rick’s parents were truly the backbone of his dream, supporting him and helping him travel to be as successful as possible.

Driven by motivation, multiple opportunities have come along for Rick to leave Hattiesburg and pursue work elsewhere, but he stays, which has allowed him to build a legacy that cannot be replaced in Mississippi. A father of a 36-year-old son and a 33-year-old daughter, Rick says that becoming a father was “the greatest thing to ever happen to me.” Coaching and teaching them has meant everything to him. A member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, 13 time Mississippi Sports Writer of the Year, and a successful podcaster, Rick has accomplished everything, but values the personal lives he has touched more than the awards and accolades. “Make a difference and enjoy it. If people remembered me and said, ‘he tried to make Mississippi a better place,’ I’m satisfied with what I’ve done.” Rick told me to never call him Mr. Cleveland again, and I’ve gotten that before. Truly one of the most in depth, informative episodes I have ever done. Please enjoy the stories, advice, and wisdom shared. Thank you Title IX! God bless!
