The long-awaited day is here! Monty Patel joined me for the first episode of season four! A native of Ball Knob, Arkansas, Patel’s love for basketball was evident at a young age. Going through a lot of options through high school and college, Patel eventually realized how much he enjoyed coaching. He dropped his pharmacy major and focused on helping to manage the basketball team at Arkansas State while also coaching intramural teams.
A true lover of the game, and very adaptable, Patel has been an assistant for many different programs in the state of Arkansas. He has been through the highs and lows both with great coaches and poorly-run programs. Building relationships is what has helped Patel get to where he is today: head coach of the Arkansas TBT team, a 64-team tournament, with a $1 million dollar prize. Patel has gained much notoriety from this role, and while coaching former Razorback players in this tournament, Patel has learned a pro style mentality from this venture.
Going through many years as an assistant coach through his high school journey, Patel finally got his chance in 2022 to be a head coach at eStem High School. Now running his own program, he knew a proven and reliable staff would be very important. Patel has enjoyed a successful spell in his first two years at eStem, but is still growing with the program. He has enjoyed every moment of the process. Still attacking life from a positive perspective, Patel is doing his best to help elevate each of his players at eStem.
Patel used a quote that stuck with me, “You’re the sum of the five people around you.” Making sure you’re surrounding yourself with people who are not negative and are uplifting you is always important. I could not have asked for a better way to bring the show back, than with Coach Patel. I hope you guys enjoy this episode, as much as I did.
