Nathan and Thomas talk about some philosophies for preaching when you are not the pastor.
- Be ready when called
- Your job as the assistant, youth pastor, or whatever is to help your pastor fulfill his job, including when you preach.
- Is your pastor in a season where health is a struggle? Have something finished, polished, and ready to preach at a moment’s notice.
- Write down the passages and main thoughts when the Spirit gives insight.
- Don’t say no. Most preachers are not lazy, so they are asking you because they need help or they were led to ask you. Either way, it makes sense to say yes.
- Stay in your lane
- Don’t preach to fix the problems. (shear the sheep)
- Don’t say what your pastor wouldn’t
- Don’t disparage or make your pastor the bad guy. If you can, lift him up by making him the hero of your stories.
- Don’t correct doctrine- not your job.
