Nathan and Thomas continue the conversation about preaching when you are not the pastor.
- When you want to preach more
- Be patient. Trust takes time to build. And you might be a great preacher, but you probably need some rough edges worked off.
- Be prepared and take it seriously. If it is teen church every time the youth pastor preaches, he will likely get limited opportunities.
- Take every opportunity (Youth group, Sunday school, nursing home, jail ministry) and use each to communicate God’s word clearly. No “it is just” attitudes.
- Preaching irregularly is not conducive to my style
- Spend the time to be ready anyway.
- Embrace the struggle and craft a series that build but do not require consecutive weeks.
- Seek feedback
- From your pastor. You might not like it or agree but it is good for you to hear where you can do better.
- If your pastor is not interested in giving feedback, find some honest friends and help each other.
- Listen to your own messages.
- Be humble!
- Be careful reusing messages
- Don’t broadcast that you are repreaching something.
- Do the work to make it fresh.
- Be yourself when you preach.
- Be grateful for every opportunity. God called your pastor to that pulpit, he doesn’t have to share.
