Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield saw a quiet young kid at SNL and figured he couldn’t be any worse than anybody else, so they took a shot and wrote a bit for him for Weekend Update. He killed. It was Eddie Murphy. The three of them went on to collaborate on some of the most iconic of SNL skits; Gumby, Buckwheat, and James Brown’s Hot Tub. The collaboration continued with them writing Coming To America, The Nutty Professor, Boomerang and the recently released sequel Coming 2 America.
