We explored the life and legacy of Carson McCullers.
With a collection of work including five novels, two plays, twenty short stories, more than two dozen nonfiction pieces, a book of children's verse, a small number of poems, and an unfinished autobiography, Carson McCullers is considered to be among the most significant American writers of the twentieth century. At least four of her works have been made into films.
After two rocky marriages to Reeves McCullers, and the death of her father, Carson McCullers moved to Nyack with with her mother and sister and lived there until her death in 1967. In the Nyack house she completed The Member of the Wedding 1946, The Ballad of the Sad Café 1951, Clock Without Hands 1961, and other plays, short stories, poetry and autobiographical works.
We looked back at the life of this important author as we marked 100 years since her birth and 50 years since her death with Dr. Nick Norwood. Norwood is the director of the Columbus State University's Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians. In addition to leading the McCullers Center, Norwood is an award-winning poet and Professor of English at CSU.
