Disciples are Called to Follow
Matthew 4:18-22
“The Synoptic Gospels” and the “The Synoptic Problem”
Two reasons for four gospels:
1. To get a fuller understanding of the life and teachings of Christ
2. To give credibility to the other accounts
Five callings on the first disciples:
1. Phase one (John 1:35-51) – Call to salvation
2. Phase two (Matthew 4:18-22) – Call to follow Him
3. Phase three (Luke 5:1-11) – Call to be only fishers of men
4. Phase four (Mark 3:14) – Call to be Apostles
5. Phase five (Matthew 10:7,16) – Call to go preach and perform miracles
Two points from the passage:
1. Jesus wanted believers to follow Him.
2. Jesus wanted followers to help Him in His mission.
Two applications to our lives:
1. Believers in Jesus are to become disciples of Jesus.
2. Disciples of Jesus are to multiply believers in Jesus.
