José Antonio Rijo Abreu was born May 13th, 1965 in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. Rijo was raised in poverty but was able to pick up baseball at an early age, and soon aspired to play in the major leagues. By the time he was 12, José was playing organized baseball with real bats and balls. The New York Yankees organization witnessed Rijo’s raw talent signed José as an amateur free-agent in 1980, when he was just 15 years old for $3,500.
