Born a generation before Mary Wollstonecraft, seventeenth-century English philosopher Mary Astell wrote the groundbreaking works A Serious Proposal to the Ladies, her plea and plan for the education of women, and an indictment of early modern marriage called Some Reflections upon Marriage.
