Join me for an interview with Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultant, David Chergosky, as he delves into the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and reveals its value to our modern lives.  David worked at the Chopra Center for Well-Being for twelve years and was privileged to have Doctors Deepak Chopra and David Simon as teachers, as well as other individuals committed to elevating personal and planetary consciousness.  David continues his work as a private consultant in the areas of Ayurveda, yoga, and meditation.  He also offers services based on a Qualia-based lifestyle model, which provides tools for restoring optimum health.

Ayurveda, why now?  Our current world is proceeding at a pace that is beyond rapid.  It can be challenging for individuals to feel anchored – Ayurveda is the compass that can help us navigate our lives.  The term itself means wisdom or knowledge of life.  Ayurveda makes it possible to see that “We are the Universe.”  Spiritual awareness is inherent in Ayurvedic teachings. This ancient wisdom offers the opportunity for us to "harness our lives," to uncover the anchor required to access our innate creativity and potential, to live happy and joyful lives.

Ayurveda is about the restoration of balance.  An experiential understanding of integrating our mind-body is the promise of Ayurveda.  As Ayurveda becomes more mainstream, the allopathic model of Western medicine struggles to keep up.  The words “wholeness, holiness, and health” are foundational to Ayurveda.  The late David Simon, MD, used these words to shift an individual’s perception of what constitutes healing.  “Healing is a movement toward our own wholeness.”  “It is a return to the memory of wholeness.”

Ayurveda presents a systematic approach toward health.  It relies on nature as its guide.  At its foundation are the five elements:  space, air, fire, water and earth – the building blocks or everything we perceive through our senses.  All aspects of nature are composed of these elements including us.  The doshas or “humors of body/mind” are simply compositional models based on these elements.  Vata dosha is ether/air; pitta is fire/water; and kapha is water/earth.  While every individual has aspects of each dosha, one dosha may be more predominant in one individual than another.  When we speak of Ayurveda’s potential to restore balance, the comparison of a rut and groove is apt.  If you are stuck in a rut, Ayurveda can put you in the groove and as a result, everything in your life opens up.

Ayurveda enables us to enjoy life, to experience joy.  It is a systematic, common sense approach.  If you are in your purpose, you enjoy your life.  This is joy.  It is not necessarily the same as a pleasure-based enjoyment.  Instead, it s a whole-hearted enjoyment, real happiness.   Limitations naturally start to fall away.

The goal of all goals in Ayurveda is “the exaltation of the spirit” – the realization that we are all spiritual beings and that we deserve to remain true to our expansive nature.  This awareness is evolutionary.  The expansion of happiness is evolutionary.  If we are not expanding our joy or happiness, there is no evolution in that.
