Humanity Chats  celebrates African American trailblazer Mary L. Thomas, COO of the Spartanburg County Foundation. Thomas was recently named as the first black female board chair of Apella Health Management, an organization transforming healthcare in the Upstate of South Carolina. Thomas' many honors include being named Top Three Distinguished Grant makers by the Council on Foundations in 2014 and, in 2006, being the first African American to win the Council on Foundation’s Robert W. Scrivner Award for Creative Grantmaking.  
She is the initiator of  Spartanburg's Annual Women's Empowerment Luncheon, the Real Talk Series for Community Change, free community COVID-19 testing and has facilitated free flu shots during the pandemic. Thomas is the recipient of several civic awards.
