The Bible is full of mysteries. Spiritual mysteries. “The wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God.” (1Cor.2:7) Paul wrote, “Servants of Christ have been put in charge of explaining God’s mysteries.” (1Cor.4:1)  And “Great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh…” (1Tim.3:17, NKJV) Mysteries are all about the spirit world, where there are angels and demons, Satan and God, and YOU! You are a spirit-being in an earth suit. You are a spirit, you have a soul and you live in a body. One day, all saved people will have new earth suits, glorified, resurrected bodies.
Born again people feed on the mysteries of God. Mysteries are what we need to hear to break us loose from the ordinary mundane material things of this earth. We spend all week in that material world and our souls hunger to hear about the spirit world, something greater than ourselves and our earthbound life.

Spiritual gifts are part of that mystery. They are spiritual gifts. Gifts from the ultimate Spirit-being to us for our help and good. They take us into the realm of the invisible God when He manifests Himself to us through the body of Christ.

Chapter 13 is the great love chapter, but sandwiched on either side of that great chapter are these words about desiring spiritual gifts. Sure, love is the better way, but let me explain that. It’s not love or gifts. He wouldn’t tell us to earnestly desire spiritual gifts on both sides of the love chapter if that were so. The love chapter is between two important chapters on spiritual gifts. There’s a reason for that and this is it. God’s love is best shown by spiritual gifts. Gifts are the best way to love. Gifts are how you show your love. Don’t just tell your honey you love her on Valentine’s Day, show her. Give her flowers and/or candy. Spiritual gifts are the best way to show love, God’s kind of love, which is miraculous, supernatural, and spiritual love.

Earnestly desire means to passionately want something. You want something so badly you are obsessed with it, hot after it. You have affection for and are zealous for it. Be enthusiastic about what you want. We are to earnestly desire charisma (the Greek word for spiritual gifts). What do you passionately and enthusiastically desire? Like you are about your keys when you lose them, or your wallet, or your debit or credit card, or your phone when one of them is lost?  We should desire spiritual gifts more than those things.
