Healing in the Communion
Communion is one of only two church ordinances sanctioned by Christ. Both ordinances speak of the greatest thing God has ever or will ever do: the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. All of eternity begins with the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Forever we will be in heaven worshiping the Lamb on the throne of the universe. His death and resurrection is the most important thing that will ever happen in time and the results of it will continue and be remembered forever.
The first ordinance (something Christ has “ordained”) is for new believers; it initiates us into the church. As the Spirit baptizes us into the body of Christ (1Cor.12:13), so man baptizes us in water to picture our participation in Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. We begin the Christian life by putting our life into the hands of the body of Christ. Someone puts us under the water and we depend on him to bring us back up. Someone buries us and raises us up. This is to picture that our spiritual life depends upon our relationship with the church. As the spiritual baptism immerses us into the universal spiritual body of Christ, so by water baptism we are immersed into the local physical body of Christ. This is a one-time event...
