The Prayer of Faith
“The prayer of faith will save the sick.” (James 5:15)
I have a dollar bill in my hand. It can do nothing for me. I can’t eat it. I can’t wear it. I can’t drive it. I can’t live in it. But if I have enough of them I can exchange it for something to eat and something to wear and something to drive and a house to live in. Money is the currency of exchange. With it I can buy anything I want. What money is in the physical realm of existence, faith is in the spiritual realm. And the spiritual is much more substantial and lasting than the physical. With faith I can have anything God has and I can do anything God can do. “With God nothing is impossible and nothing is impossible for those who believe,” Jesus said. Everything God has is free. It doesn’t cost money, intelligence, effort or anything. But you can have it if you have faith. And faith is the gift of God.
The words of Mark 11:22 & 24 are some of the most astounding words ever spoken by any human. “Have faith in God. Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” And they were spoken by Jesus Christ Himself, so they must be true. If anyone knows anything about faith and prayer, it would be Jesus. He lived by faith in His Father and nobody ever spent more time in prayer than He did. He’d get up early in the morning before anybody else woke up and stay in prayer long after everyone else went home and went to bed (Mark 1:35; John 7:53-8:1). He prayed so much the disciples asked Him to teach them to pray. This tells us we have to learn to pray and we have to learn how to pray. No wonder they asked Him how to pray, they had seen God multiply food for the multitude and many other miraculous things.
