The Sufferings of Christ and the Glory that Followed
1 Peter 1:11
I want us to examine the sufferings of our dear Savior, but not as one examines a rose so as to take away the beauty of it. In close inspection of the pains and sorrows of the Lamb of God we will find beauty unequaled.
I. His Sufferings were PURPOSEFUL
All His sufferings were unjust. Pilate passed the verdict when he said, “I find no fault in this man.” Yet He still suffered. He had gone about doing good, healing all who were oppressed. What did He do to deserve such torment? He healed the sick, fed the hungry, taught the word of God, glorified God by everything He said and did. He never sinned once. But still He was brutally arrested, unjustly tried, convicted and endured the most excruciating pain of any human being ever. Why? What was the purpose of His sufferings? He was suffering for you, and me. We were guilty. We have broken the law of God and become criminals in God’s holy courtroom, condemned to die. That whip was our whip. Those stripes upon His blessed back were stripes that should have been on our sinful backs. Those nails were our nails. He went through hell on that cross because of us and for us.
