What It Means to be Christlike
When it says “the disciples were first called Christians at Antioch” we always think that means they were sweet loving people like Jesus and so they said, “Let’s call them little Christs; they are good citizens and do no harm to their neighbors.” But if you look at the context of that statement it has very little to do with their character, as important as that is. Jesus certainly was a loving meek Man. But I assure you, if you look in the Bible, that is not the aspect of Jesus that made them think they were Christlike. That would have been true of the first 30 years of His life, but Jesus was much more than that.
Jesus was the powerful Son of Man who worked miracles: cleansed lepers, healed the blind and lame, and raised the dead. His love did more than make Him good; it made Him powerful. Sure He went about doing good, but He was also anointed by God to heal all who were oppressed by the devil. How could He do that? Because God was with Him (Acts 10:38), not because He was God. Jesus of Nazareth didn’t do His mighty works as the divine Son of God. He lived His miraculous life and did His mighty deeds as a man full of the Holy Spirit.
