Saint John the Baptist was a relative of Jesus Christ, and known as the "forerunner". He was a desert hermit that led a movement shortly before Jesus' ministry, urging people to repent of their sins and turn to God. He was the one the Old Testament prophets predicted would prepare the way for the Messiah.
At the beginning of Jesus' ministry, John baptized Jesus, prompting a miracle where a voice from heaven said "“This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” St John the Baptist was eventually imprisoned and beheaded by King Herod. Jesus said of John: "among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he".
In this episode we will read accounts of Saint John the Baptist's ministry, primarily from the Gospel of Luke. We will also read a short sermon by Saint Augustine of Hippo about Saint John the Baptist.
