Biblical Foundations of Prayer
WHAT PRAYER IS
Part 5
Jesus took for granted that we would pray. “When you pray...” This applies to your life outside of church. To be a prayer warrior, you must commune with God constantly.
We have many scriptures that even Jesus had to pray… so lets define what prayer is
Prayer is more than talking to God … It is communing with God
Dictionary:
· act of asking for a favor, a solemn address to the Supreme Being, consisting of adoration, confession of our sins, supplication for mercy and forgiveness, intercession for blessings on others, and thanksgiving
How does God in His Word define prayer?
Jesus taught on prayer, Paul taught on prayer, James, we have examples in the OT and NT
NEED TO KNOW WORD TO PRAY RIGHT
Jesus used the Word when he was tempted. It is written… also written
· Prayer is not 1st. The Word is first. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh
1. Not Prayer became flesh
God desires us to have effective prayers.
· Requires us to know
o what prayer is
o How to apply faith
o When to pray different kinds of prayers
Many people pray out of desperation, not knowing the will, disagreement with the Word. This results in prayer that is not fruitful.
Brother Paul encouraged Timothy in 1 Timothy chapter 1 to love, stay in the fight of sincere real genuine faith THEN he exhorts on prayer.
1 Tim 2:1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,
“I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;”. I Timothy 2:8 NKJV
1 Tim 2:1 FIRST OF all, then, I admonish and urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all men, 2 For kings and all who are in positions of authority or high responsibility, that [outwardly] we may pass a quiet and undisturbed life [and inwardly] a peaceable one in all godliness and reverence and seriousness in every way. 3 For such [praying] is good and right, and [it is] pleasing and acceptable to God AMP
· Includes 4 types of prayers:
1. Supplications – requests, meet sense of need, asking (deeeseius)
2. Prayers – Obtaining good, implies devotion or worship (proseuche)
3. Intercessions - the action of saying a prayer on behalf of another person
4. Giving of thanks – 25% of all prayer is thanks
2 for kings and all who are in authority (we are to pray for our President, Congress, Judges down to local authorities), that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (can pray for them to come to the knowledge, enlightenment that Jesus is Lord. Don’t have to agree, like policies) 5 For there is one God and one Mediator
