Hebrews takes some time in chapters 3 and 4 to give the original readers, and now us, a warning from history. Reminding the Jewish people of their ancestors in the Exodus, the writer tells us that when we are constantly asking, “Are We There Yet?”, we risk missing the thing that waiting was supposed to produce in us. How do we wait well and expectantly, ensuring that we don’t miss out on the kind of promise Jesus has for us? And this promise is that Rest will be a reward for all of the trouble, pain, and hard work of the lives that we are in, if we can persevere to get there.
