The Summits (1:49) [1963]. As Erik mentions, more people in the world could tell you about the summit of Mount Everest than can tell you anything about this girl group. This is the first released version, and it namechecks other groups who do "the hanky panky " - hot gossip!
Tommy James & The Shondells (28:24) [1964/1966] These teens from Niles, Michigan recorded the tune in 1964 and it went from Niles to Nowheresville, but with a crucial layover in Pittsburgh, where it became a dance hit that then spread nationwide. Here's why: it rocks. Listen to this moldy oldie with fresh ears and you'll be asking to get hit one more time.
The Mojo Men (1:03:22) [1966] Sly Stone produced this version, and the arrangement with funky 12-string guitar has his handprints all over it. Some good James Brown-style screams from the main Mojo man, too - you gotta hear this one!!
