In the Yogic system of meditation, there exist four states of consciousness: waking, deep sleep, dream, and the fourth state or higher state of consciousness. In meditation, we experience the fourth or Knower state of consciousness. Similar to deep sleep, where we are free from the physical and emotional states that we know in the waking state. but we can function most effectively. Similar to the dream state what we know in the waking state is like a dream and when we wake up from the waking state we are in the fourth or higher state of consciousness. The fourth state of consciousness permeates all the other states of consciousness so through this practice one can know the Knower and live in this peace and joy that is forever shining.
