In our latest podcast we sit down with legendary Vashon Coach Floyd Irons. A Vashon graduate, he returned to his roots and was hired at Vashon High School to teach social studies. He was later named assistant principal at the school and has also served as principal and head basketball coach.
Under Irons’ tutelage, the 1983 Wolverines’ squad went to the state tournament and won the coach’s first state title. In the ensuing years, his teams won the 1984, ’85, ’86, ’88 , 1989 and 1994 state championships. Vashon returned to state in 1999 and accomplished a three-peat, with state crowns coming in 2000 and 2001.
Considered by some as the greatest head coach of our era, he also talks about the success of his son Altonio Irons following in his footsteps as a great coach.
