Welcome to Season 2, Episode 9 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast.
This week my guest is Sylvia Morrison, an empowerment specialist and humanitarian. She is the Founder and Director of Links Across Borders, a registered non- profit organization that co-creates libraries in Ghana, West Africa.
There is so much packed into this longer episode. We kept chatting because the lessons that Sylvia shares are so valuable. Sylvia was born and raised in Jamaica. After having her children she decided she wanted to try and give them a better life, so she moved to Canada. Only problem was that in Canada she did not have the credentials to use her teaching skills. So, to stay afloat and take care of her family, Sylvia had found work through a temp agency. At one point she was packing cups in a factory. There is a story here that changes Sylvia's life forever! Listen in to hear how Sylvia went from packing cups, to being able to go back to teaching, but this time at a college. From there Sylvia gets a calling to go and serve where she has been sending money since she was working in that cup factory. At first it was for a Christmas party for the kids, next it was to build libraries for them. Now she lives there full time and brings college students over to help through a study-abroad program.
Links Across Borders has co-created eight fully resourced libraries in Ghana since 2013 to date. Sylvia is known as Queen Mother in Kpedze-Todze, Ghana. Her title is Mama Agbalenyo I. (Mama Ag-ba-len-yo the first)
Sylvia has received numerous awards and international recognition, for her transformational Community Development work. She has traveled and worked with individuals, and communities globally.
