Description

The experience of being out of your mind with boredom has something lovely to give you in return, but only if you let it do its work and inspire you. Distractions can’t help you gain this!

Episode Highlights

01:00    Witnessing my child’s expectations around boredom illuminates my own experiences with it.

01:32    My kid looks to me for guidance on what to do when we get bored, and all I can tell her is, you just live with it and have to come up with something to do.

01:40    My kid’s expectation is that we should immediately stop what we’re doing, drop everything and FIX IT when she’s bored. Her disappointment when we do not is evident.

02:28    If you constantly have something put in front of you to alleviate boredom, you miss out on the chance to create something new and genuine from your own imagination.

02:40    As an artist, being bored was so important and drove an incredible amount of creativity.

03:58    Boredom calls you to use your senses and reengage with the reality before you.

05:40    My daughter’s illustrations are borne from us allowing her to sit in boredom without anyone trying to make it better. And they reveal such a vivid inner world!

06:40    When you stop trying to fix boredom through distractions, you’re able to come up with cool ideas you haven’t experienced before.

08:00    I want to live a life that I’d enjoy watching on TV – one where I am engaged with my life and not merely watching someone else’s.

08:40    Maybe being bored is a sign that I’m being boring.

11:40    The key to alleviating boredom is to shift your focus outside of yourself, to find curiosity for what’s going on out there and engage with it.

12:00    Boredom is inherently about being self-centered and feeling like your pleasure is the most important aspect of reality right then and you’re not getting that.

14:00    I love being entertained, and I want more of that in my life. How am I going to create it?
