There are always going to be a million choices you can make about how to spend your time. How can we decide how we want to feel about the choices we make, and how does this affect the outcomes?
Episode Highlights
30 We often overestimate what we can accomplish in one day but underestimate what we can accomplish in a year.
15 Raise your hand if you spend a lot of time looking at your list not being able to decide which one task will bring you closer to your goals.
21 If you do know what’s most important to you, the most important question you can ask is, “will this task bring me closer to achieving that goal?”
00 Once you answer the question, “Is this important,” if the answer is yes, you have to just move forward and do it.
20 Having a master list of things to do doesn’t actually motivate me to do them. Just picking one and doing it is way easier than looking at my big list.
30 Having too many things to do and choose from makes it very hard to commit to just one and take action.
10 What’s stopping me from taking action on my list? Why am I living in the land of confusion?
50 Humans run out of energy and attention to make decisions incredibly fast each day. The scientific term is “decision fatigue” and it’s real.
10 The best thing you can do to help your brain out and fight decision fatigue is to start removing decisions from your life that don’t matter very much.
27 Once you get used to doing something frequently enough, it becomes a routine and now it’s not a decision anymore, it’s just what you do.
00 Things that objectively don’t take any more effort than other actions, such as chopping vegetables instead of fruits for breakfast, can be perceived by your brain as harder because you aren’t used to doing them, and so you procrastinate or avoid doing them.
20 If something is new and not part of your routine, it takes energy, thought, and time. So we can try and reserve that energy for new things that make a difference toward your goals and not create drama everywhere with minor decisions like what to make for breakfast.
00 Try to take as many decisions off the table as you can before the day begins.
30 We get to choose our thoughts, which means we get to choose if we are going to enjoy an experience or resist it and make it agonizing.
04 It’s easier to mirror someone who is already good at acting, thinking, and feeling like you want to act, think and feel than to conjure it up all by yourself. Find a mentor!
00 Thoughts are thoughts, they aren’t the capital T Truth – but they sure can make us feel crazy when we believe everything we think, especially if it’s not something we like!
05 Woah, woah, woah, brain – this didn’t happen TO me, it’s just happening.
30 What thought could you choose that lets you feel empowered, in control of the situation, and happier? Choose that thought and hold onto it.
