We are so thrilled to have our resident therapist joining us again this season. This time to talk about navigating family dynamics, especially as we head into the holidays and will likely be spending more time with family.
In this episode Deborah touches on all the struggles and divisiveness affecting families today including politics, covid, drugs, LGBTQ, parenting styles and technology use.
She offers up 3 choices we all have when we have disagreements on these and other topics:
Compromise, Sacrifice, and Agree to Disagree. Listen as she provides insight into how each of these can work to ease tough family situations.
One topic that Deborah dives deeper on is technology use and how it is defining our family dynamics. Technology creates a space for bad behavior and creates a space for dependence. It is disrupting the way families communicate and interact and changing family culture.
She cites that:
66% of children have negative body image and poor self confidence
85% of american suffer from low self esteem, an all time high
And the result is mental illness rates are at an all time high as well.
Listen to the episode to hear her advice on how to reduce technology use in your family. Here is a brief summary of her recommendations:
Unified approach between parents
Consistency - kids need it to thrive
Provide safety and security and reassurance - don't just rip it away.
Have conversations about it, away from it, set up acceptable limits and expectations
Set-up windows and amounts of time
Kids need routines, responsibilities, expectations, limits, and safety
Some more advice that Debotah leaves our listeners with in this episode:
How are we modeling behavior for our children?
How are we taking care of ourselves?
Are we creating an environment in our home that reflects what we value?
How are we planning togetherness as a family?
About Dr. Deborah Brown
Dr. Brown is a psychotherapist and holistic health provider working in private practice.
She is a behavioral health researcher and writer, examining how we make decisions
about our health and our relationships.
“For years, I tried to change myself to fit into a world that was confusing,
inconsistent, and overwhelming. When I realized that this approach caused
me great pain and severe mental health challenges, I decided that it made
more sense to do the work to accept myself and change the world instead!
I share this experience through my work and my writing to empower others
to find their path through healthy habits, improvements in perspective, and
healing self-exploration.”
