HEIDELBERG: “THIS IS THE REAL STORY”

WRITTEN BY HUNTER KLEIN

Elmer: In 1943, my grandmother got a call.

British Man: Hello. Is this Mrs. Ullengaard?

German Woman: Speaking!

British Man: We have heard about your work, Mrs. Ullengaard. We are impressed.

German Woman: [muffled noises]: Who is zis? You must have ze wrong numba.

British Man: Mrs. Ullengaard…Are you prepared for the most dangerous mission of your life?

Elmer: The man was Stewart Menzies, head of the Secret Intelligence Service in Britain during WW2. My grandmother was a barista in Frankfurt, Germany, where she lived alone. She was a friendly, lively woman, beloved in the community. A skilled videographer, she would often be hired to film birthday parties and neighborhood festivals for friends in the area. And if you put an M16 to any of their heads, not one of them would suspect any anti-Nazi, allied leanings.

Elmer: That’s just how good of a spy she was.

British Man: Mrs. Ullengaard, I need you to come to Allied Headquarters immediately. You could be saving millions of lives.

German Woman: I’m on my way.

[Intense music]

Elmer: The following is more than a recounting of true events: it is a testament to Anna Ullengaard, my grandmother, whose video footage and extensive notes have made this investigative report possible. In our lives, we’ve attributed countless reasons to Nazi demise: American support, the invasion of the Soviet Union, Adolf Hitler’s psychotic break. After 75 years of searching, the truth has finally come to light: it was the espionage done in the Nazi Liberal Arts, Theater, and Drama Camp in Heidelberg, Germany, in the years 1944-1945, that brought down Hitler’s regime. This is the real story.

Elmer: This is my grandmother’s story.

Elmer: This. Is. Heidelberg.
