Humans are complicated animals. We don’t always react the way the those effects come through our nervous system and the stress response whether we know it or not. With our permission or not. From our present environment or from any point in our past. We know now that the nervous system acts like a superior security system designed to take all of your experiences and prevent you from dying.
Most fit pros along with their clients are living in a state of hypervigilance everyday. And that state changes how the body responds at a cellular level. Excessive amounts of stress can cause physical changes in digestion, immune response, reproduction, hormones, sleep… pretty much every system in the body.
Exercise and diet is another kind of stress. So the challenge for fit pros and coaches is to structure workouts, create classes etc. that are hard enough to trigger an adaptation without setting off another internal alarm. That sweet spot is what we call an edge. We have lots of them. We can talk about physical edge, emotional edge, mental edge but what we mean is that line that takes you to the point between can and can’t. Where you’re not sure if you can do this thing. The job of a trauma informed coach is to help students learn how to approach their edge in a way that feels safe and effective. This sweet spot is where change happens and where resilience gets built. This is why an integrated trauma informed approach with clients can be so helpful.
