My mindfulness practice of daily meditation saved me during the pandemic. No joke. Being mindful and connecting to my senses in the present moment kept me from stressing out over quarantine, the need for work, worry over my children. I've never been so "in touch" with myself.
But like anything, if you don't use it, you lose it. And with the World starting back up, that mindful, meditation practice tends to be the first thing to go when you get busy. And eventually all those stresses start to invade again.
Stress management and mindfulness expert Paula Kommor talks to us to today about mindfulness, the meditative process, the benefits of being more mindful, and even leads us through a short meditation.
Some of the other things we discuss are the following takeaways:
1. Mindfulness is being non-judgmentally aware of the present moment. It's turning on your senses and turning off your thinking brain.
2. Mindfulness and becoming mindful is a skillset that has to be built. We aren't born mindful.
3. It is built through meditative techniques of learning to sit with uncomfortable feelings instead of repressing them.
4. You must carve out time and space for yourself every day to successfully manage stress.
5. Development in a practice of meditation is trial and correct, not trial and error. Play around with it and see what works for you.
6. You can incorporate mindfulness into any rhythmic thing you do throughout the day that engages your senses.
7. We can have up to 40,000 thoughts a day. 70% of those are of a negative bias. So we need to focus on gratitude to balance that bias out.
8. Mindfulness helps increase your happiness, your short term memory, your decision making ability, and your self-awareness.
9. Mindfulness helps decrease stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.
10. The way to encourage others around you to become more mindful is to develop a mindfulness habit yourself and become a role model for others.
11. Starting a new mindfulness practice takes baby steps - that's why it's called a PRACTICE.
