Description

In this episode of The NuBlack Podcast, we sit down with Dr. Nefertiti Makeda – journalist turned educator, Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Norfolk Collegiate, and founder of Andinet International School in Ethiopia (https://www.andinet.edu.et/).

This NuBlack conversation explores the nuances of starting a school, navigating an Ethiopian landscape as an African American, and global connectivity amongst Black populations. Drawing on her lived experience, Dr. Makeda reflects on education as a site of power and possibility across borders.

Along the way, we explore Ethiopia’s unique historical position in the Black world – the only African nation to successfully resist European colonialism – and how that legacy continues to shape contemporary culture. We also discuss Emperor Menelik II…and his surprisingly modern durag activity.

This episode is for anyone interested in Pan-Africanism in practice, Black internationalism, and what it actually takes to turn vision into infrastructure.
