In this week’s study, I continue in Chapter 21 with verses 8 to 10. Before I get into the study, I talk about the upcoming United Nations Summit called “The Future of Global Governance: UN 2.0”. This summit has to do with the global elite and their desire to take over and control the world’s daily walk to fit their take over agenda, for a New World Order. I also discuss the leader of Turkey calling for an alliance with all the Arab Nations to stop the alleged takeover plan by Israel, which may be a sign of Ezekiel 38.
In our last study we finished up with verse 7, where John reveals to us the words of Yahshua Messiah to His elect bride that as over comers of the trials and tribulations, we shall inherit all things and we shall be one with Yahweh and Yahshua Messiah.
Now we turn to those that have rejected Yahweh and His ways.
Yahweh warns people to turn from their evil deeds (8)
As verse 7 shows, these are the words of Yahweh. He has just shown John the New Jerusalem, the wonderful city where he will live with his people. That city is Yahweh’s gift to his people, and it will always be their permanent home. However, now Yahweh warns about an extremely serious matter. Not all people will live in the New Jerusalem; in fact, many people can never enter it.
These people will, instead, share the devil’s punishment in the lake of fire. The reason is their evil deeds. During their lives, they chose to serve the devil.
8 But the fearful = The “fearful” denote those who had not firmness boldly to maintain their professed principles, or who were afraid to avow themselves as the friends of Yahweh in a wicked world. They stand in contrast with those who “overcome,” in verse 7. Let me explain that. The fearful as those cowards!
And unbelieving = Those who have not true faith; confirmed infidels and all who have not the sincere faith of the gospel.
And the abominable = The verb from which this word is derived means to excite disgust; to feel disgust at; to abominate or abhor;
And sorcerers = See the word used here -pharmakeusi (a drug, that is, spell giving potion); a druggist (“pharmacist”) or poisoner, that is, (by extension) a magician: - sorcerer. We get our word “pharmacy” from that.
The natural meaning of the word would rather be “poisoners;” and in fact in John’s days the two generally went together. It is therefore no wonder that both the Apostles speak of it as a real crime connected with murder and other “works of the flesh,” as well as with idolatry. For of course professed sorcery involved devil-worship, even if the devil had no more direct communication with the sorcerers than he has with all liars and impostors.
And all liars = All who are false in their statements, their promises, their contracts.
We now come to the final two visions of the Bride and the City, described in 21:9-22:5.
An angel shows the New Jerusalem to John (9-10)
It probably surprised John very much to see this angel again. When John last saw the angel, John probably felt very afraid of him. This angel was one of the special servants of Yahweh who brought Yahweh’s judgments against the earth. The angel acted then in order to satisfy the anger of Yahweh. We are sure that the angel carried out that sacred duty in a very severe manner.
In this verse 9, however, everything has changed. Yahweh has finally and completely dealt with the devil and all his evil forces. He has even created a new world for his people.
9 I will show thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife = I will show you what represents the redeemed church now to be received into permanent union with its Lord - as a bride about to be united to her husband.
