In this week’s study, I discuss Jezebel that false prophetess of verse 20 in Chapter 2.
Jezebel = “chaste” This patroness of Baal-worship will have her sinister anti-type in the future.
Which calleth herself a prophetess = “a female foreteller or an inspired woman [ a prophet is an individual whom Yahweh reveals His truth and through He speaks, or communicates His divine Word to others, “which from the very nature of His case are” His purposes of grace with the warnings and announcements of judgments that pertain thereto the events surrounding us even today]”.
Seduce = “plan-ah-o” to cause to wander or go astray; used of doctrinal error and religious deceit.
Commit fornication = “porn-yoo'-o” [From “por'-nay”Feminine of “pro-nos”; a prostitute; figuratively an idolater: - harlot, whore]; to act the harlot, that is, (literally) indulge unlawful lust (of either sex), or (figuratively) practise idolatry: - commit (fornication).
In the J. B. Phillips Bible of 1958, it reads “but who by her teaching deceives my servants into sexually immorality and eating idol meats”. We can see this happening throughout this nation even today.
The original Jezebel was the wife of Ahab, king of Israel, in the time of Elijah. She not only corrupted the entire house of Ahab but also Israel, causing them to worship Baal and Ashteroth. It was so bad that Elijah thought he was the only faithful person left in Israel, but Yahweh kept 3000 faithful to Himself and encouraged Elijah with the knowledge. The descendants of Jezebel also corrupted Judah.
This Jezebel was apparently a woman in the Thyatira church. In the Syriac and other versions of the Bible it is translated “you tolerate your wife Jezebel”. She could have been a prominent woman in the church or even the pastor’s wife. This woman was allowed to falsely prophesy and get people to follow her into sexual immorality and detestable practices. She used false prophesy, pretending to speak directly for Yahweh, to persuade people to follow her in her sinful ways.
We see this technique today everywhere. Many people are saying they are speaking directly for Yahweh who has spoken to them or appeared to them in dreams. Many are not afraid to claim that almost every word out of their mouths is the direct Word of Yahweh. These people are in need of rebuke but most people are afraid to stand up to them for fear of lawsuits or seeming intolerant or unloving. That is not what the Bible tells us to do as the body of Yahshua Messiah. We must judge prophecy and test the spirits.
1Jo 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of Yahweh: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
If they are found to be false prophesies that either do not come true or are against the precepts of Scripture, then we are to watch out for them.
Mt 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
My intention is to take this study to a deep level. Deeper than most of you are used to! I am asking no one to agree with me; however I do ask that you check every detail that I present out for yourself.
Don’t end up like those in Hosea 4:6 ‘My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God (Elohim), I will also forget thy children.’
But, be like those in 2Timothy 2:15 ‘Study to shew thyself approved unto God (Yahweh), a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.’
