The word “triggered” has become increasingly common in our everyday conversations. For many, so has the actual experience.
In some cases it’s meant as a derogatory way to describe someone who is overly sensitive.
While you have to admit that there are some people who seem to spend their lives eagerly awaiting the perfect opportunity to be offended, in reality, there are many reasons why an individual will have a strong emotionally upsetting reaction to something they perceive to be threatening.
They can be overwhelmed in the moment which lowers their reaction threshold. They might be feeling alone or particularly vulnerable. Maybe, they perceive any difference in opinion as a threat to their identify. Or, they may be confronted with something that triggers an intense response because they're traumatized, and associate the trigger to a traumatic event or events.
My quest in this episode has a unique take on triggers, what they mean and how the things that trigger us can actually help us grow over time, if we have the willingness and strategies to manage them.
