Becoming a parent has its slew of challenges, but one that is not discussed often is the moment we have to start advocating on behalf of our children. Some parents are very comfortable advocating while others are hesitant. Where do Ashley and Kimberly fall? Can you guess which is hesitant and which is firm? You may be surprised!
Our amazing community added these suggestion to advocate successfully for your child:
- Ask questions (in a nonjudgemental way to ensure you understand the protocols)
- Trust your gut
- Use friends as a “gut check”
- Be kind and respectful in your communication
- Remembering that kids can’t advocate for themselves
- Write a checklist/points of discussion
- “Parent the parent” - If you struggled as a child to be seen and heard, it is natural to feel uncomfortable in situations where you're fighting for your child to be seen and heard (and you as the advocate!) Remember that your concerns are valid and you aren’t being difficult.
