As leaders and business owners in the online space, we often fall victim to the mantra that “content is king”. We get trapped on the content hamster wheel, constantly creating, sometimes forcing things even when we feel like we have nothing to say. Blog posts, newsletters, podcasts, Facebook Lives, Instagram Stories .... All in an attempt to be unique and engaging. In Episode 14 of Just One Simple Thing, I’ll offer you a way to get off the hamster wheel by creating less content but using it more intentionally.

I’m going to share how you can maximize your content and have more time to do the things you love. But this isn’t just about making things easier on you. It’s also about delivering more value to your audience.

The best way to get the most out of any new content is to create a core piece based on a theme and use it to develop a week-long (or even month-long) conversation with your audience.

Pretty much no one in your audience sees every piece of content you put out there, but there is an even deeper reason for centering your content around a theme.

If you are putting out 8-10 pieces of different, unrelated content each week, and say your core audience sees half of it, that’s 4 or 5 different things you are asking them to think about and try torelate to. It’s just adding more clutter to their brain. But if you give them several related pieces of content in a short time, now you have the opportunity to take them deeper ... to really drive home the important parts of the message.

Going deep with one theme is a better way of serving your audience than cluttering their
brain with scatter-shot.

So here’s my simple system for creating a week-long conversation.

  1. Start with one piece of core content. This could be a blog post, podcast, YouTube video, Bible Study ...whatever you consider your “home base” content-wise.
  2. Once your core content is complete, pull out six distinct pieces. Start with finding three short sentences. These should be three “sticky statements” that are memorable, actionable and attention-grabbing.
  3. Next, choose two medium-length passages .... Around 200–300 characters or 50–60 words. One passage should be a keyword-rich summary of the content.
    Choose one other medium-length passage that can be used for a Facebook post, Instagram caption, or podcast audiogram.
  4. Finally, choose one long passage .... up to 200 words. This one can be used as a micro-blog on Instagram, or the beginning of a script for a Live video 

Creating this week-long conversation makes your content more recognizable and consumable ... and better able to make a real impact.
