Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon:
Advent 1: Mary and Gabriel, the Annunciation
Advent is the season of waiting. This week we look at the story of Mary and the angel Gabriel. The Annunciation
This Advent we are looking at the story through the lens of Mary. The one single person in all of history who was closest to Jesus, his mom. Historically we know that Mary was in Ephesus later in life. Can you imagine the Christmas Eve gatherings there with the community in Ephesus? "Mary, tell us the story again..."
There's a long history in our faith of recognizing the parallels of athletic training (formation) and spiritual training (formation). Time under "tension" can seem like forever. We sometimes pray, "Lord, I want to grow and change in this area, how much longer will it take?". Sometimes we long for change, we pay attention to what's setting us off, and to those areas of our lives where we would like to do better so that we can love God and love our neighbors better. Like athletes, these changes don't happen overnight. Some of us are waiting for the world to be made whole. Waiting for God's kingdom to come about.
A beautiful reminder that God loves us enough to walk in these places with us.
