Join us for Canon Tim Clayton's sermon: Leading with Beauty.
The Holy Trinity - Trinity Sunday
In this impactful sermon, Tim takes us through church history and the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Beneath the banners of Faith, Hope, and Love, the church has historically put forward the ideas of following truth, goodness, and beauty, in that particular order. Thinking that if we could show people the truth, we could get them to do good things and find beauty in their lives, and so Faith, Hope, and Love would lead people to what is True, Good, and Beautiful.
A dogma should be something so wonderful, so glorious, that it defies easy categories. But how do we address the challenge that when people are so wounded by broken trust, that they become unable to trust authority.
Hans Urs von Balthasar in the 1960s saw that Truth, Goodness, and Beauty should be flipped, and instead we should lead with Beauty. Beauty does not merely entertain, it invades. It changes the one who absorbs it, rearranging us and sending us on a trajectory towards the open sea of the beauty of God. The beauty of God shows us that when we live the good, we authenticate with our lives that we are all made "good" by our loving creator, which in turn leads us towards living more completely in the truth of God's co-suffering unconditional love for us and for our neighbors, and for all creation.
This is a trinitarian way of living in the world. We know the beauty of these beliefs, this is who we are called to be, to carry the beauty and mystery of the Holy Trinity.
