My brother Tom Sanders makes his Cinema Rising debut to discuss two films working through aspects of Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo:
Obsession (1976): Racked with guilt over the presumed death of his wife and daughter, a New Orleans businessman (Cliff Robertson) travels to Florence where he encounters a woman with an uncanny resemblance to his late spouse.
Suzhou River (2001): Mardar, a Shanghai motorbike courier falls in love with the daughter of a local hood on the banks of the city's dirtiest river. After he is coerced into betraying her, she dives into the water, never to be seen again. Years later, Mardar meets a nightclub performer who he believes must be the same girl.
Cara Li joins to provide some cultural and historical context for Suzhou River.
