Description

We close out our first season with two tales of unhealthy romantic obsession - separated by decades, yet sharing more than a little connective tissue. Joe MacDonald returns for an extra-long deep dive into the films.

Mad Love  (1935) The final directorial effort from Karl Freund is a macabre horror classic, based on the novel 'The Hands of Orlac' (often cited as an early example of body horror fiction). Mad doctors, knife-throwing murderers and The Theatre of Horrors all make an appearance in this formally inventive B-movie.

Fear (1996) Largely remembered for one scene in particular, James Foley's teen-movie/dad nightmare adapted for screen has enjoyed something of a critical reappraisal in recent years. Reese Witherspoon plays a teenage girl who falls for seemingly perfect Mark Wahlberg... however, things are far from what they seem.
