Description

A powerful solar storm pushed the Northern Lights far enough south last Tuesday that they were brilliantly visible to the naked eye. This photo of the lights was taken from the hills east of Brigham City, above Eagle Mountain Golf Course. The lights resulted from a surge of solar activity, including multiple coronal mass ejections launched from the Sun on Nov. 9–10 that hit the Earth’s magnetosphere and triggered a severe G4-level geomagnetic storm. Charged particles funneled along Earth’s magnetic field lines into the upper and atmosphere ignited dazzling auroral displays that lit up skies as far south as Texas...
