Oregano
Origanum vulgare
Appearance: Oregano is an herb related to mint. It has oval pointed leaves that grow opposite each other on the stalk. Its flowers are white or purple and grow on a spike at the tip of the stalk.
Wild oregano is a major part of the cuisine in Israel. Flavoring herbs were important when meat could not be refrigerated and therefore was not fresh.
And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.
