Focus can only occur when we have said yes to one option and no to all other options. As Tim Ferris says, "What you don't do determines what you can do." In other words, elimination is a prerequisite for focus.
What can we do to focus on the things that matter and ignore those that don't? Multitasking forces your brain to switch your focus back and forth very quickly from one task to another. Most people don't have trouble focusing. They have trouble deciding. I mean that most healthy humans have a brain capable of focusing if we get distractions out of the way.
Steps for Focusing
The Pomodoro Method is a time-blocking technique that can help compartmentalize your tasks into manageable 25-minute intervals. For example, to use the Pomodoro Method, work for 25 minutes, taking five-minute breaks between 25-minute intervals. Then, after four intervals, you can take a more extended 15-30 minute break. This method of time blocking gives you the needed break in between work sessions to help you maintain focus longer and more sustainably.
Start by taking several deep breaths while focusing on each breath. When your mind naturally begins to wander, gently and uncritically guide your focus back to your deep breathing.
