Using stories to connect is one thing. Relying on your individual training experiences to coach clients is another.
It's hard. Maybe you are just starting out and don't have a lot of clients' experiences to pull from. Or maybe you just really want to share something that has worked for you. But sharing your personal experiences may be doing a disservice to your clients. Whether it is giving advice that might not actually be appropriate for their circumstances, making them feel that how things work for you (the fitness expert) should work for them, or simply hogging the conversation, your personal experiences can get in the way of client-centered coaching, a.k.a., the thing people are paying you for.
In this episode I share some times you'll want to steer clear of sharing personal experience, some times it can be appropriate and helpful, and what strategies to use instead to make the personal training experience valuable for the person who deserves it the most, the client!
