BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Josh Mejia caught everybody by surprise at the recent BTX Developers luncheon by casually mentioning that the Musk Foundation was donating another million dollars to downtown revitalization in Brownsville.
Mejia, executive director of the Brownsville Community Improvements Corporation, was one of the keynote speakers at the event. Co-sponsored by the Rio Grande Valley Partnership, the City of Brownsville and the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation, the luncheon brought together potential investors, real estate developers and community leaders. The luncheon was followed by two bus tours of Brownsville, one of which took in BCIC’s much anticipated e-Bridge Center.
In his remarks, Mejia gave an update on the e-Bridge Center and other quality of life improvements coming to Brownsville. But, he received the biggest applause when he mentioned inward investment by Elon Musk.
“I was texting back and forth with my board members and about 45 minutes ago I receive an email from the Musk Foundation. It is like perfect timing. It is like they know we are here. Well, they just mentioned they donated another million (dollars) towards this program. So, now we have $2 million,” Mejia said. The audience cheered.
