MISSION, Texas - Former Mission Mayor Norberto ‘Beto’ Salinas says he is running for the top job in his city again in order to right the wrongs of the current administration.
There is a hotly-contested four-way mayoral race currently under way in the Rio Grande Valley’s fourth largest city. Salinas is challenging Mayor Armando ‘Mando’ O’Caña, current City Commissioner Norie Gonzalez-Garza, and UT-Rio Grande Valley student Victor Anzalduas for the top slot.
Salinas, a land developer, served as mayor of Mission for 20 years, from 1998 to 2018. In 2018, he was narrowly defeated by O’Caña.
Salinas recently sat down for an in-depth interview with Rio Grande Guardian editor Steve Taylor to discuss his platform. In the interview, he pulled no punches.
“You can see the difference. From the 23rd safest city in Texas to the 78th now. So. what’s happening? There’s no leadership,” Salinas said.
“That is why I am running, because people have come to me. I have enough work as it is right now, with my business. But, I am willing to give it four more years, just one term, to straighten this whole thing out. And get somebody in the next election who is going to be knowledgeable about the city and is going to care about the city.”
