HARLINGEN, Texas - In his regular podcast with The Rio Grande Guardian, Rev Torres reminds taxpayers that this year’s filing deadline is July 15.
Torres is part of the Texas Taxpayer Assistance Project, a division of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA).
To help taxpayers get their income-tax questions answered, TRLA is holding a Facebook Live event on July 13 at 12:00 p.m.
The livestream will feature staff with the Texas Taxpayer Assistance Project, with presentations in English and Spanish. The tax project provides free legal help on federal income tax matters to low-income Texans in the 68 counties TRLA serves.
Tax project staff will also discuss the new deadline for non-tax-filers to register for a stimulus payment from the federal government under the CARES Act. An individual who hasn’t filed a 2019 federal income tax return may be eligible to use the free non-filers tool on IRS.gov, which is available in English and Spanish.
The event will also address tax questions such as:
The event will be available for replay on the TRLA Facebook site.
In the podcast, Torres also gives advice on what to do if a resident has lost or had stolen their economic impact payment from the federal government.
Torres was a regular contributor on taxation issues when KHID 88.1 FM and KJJF 88.9 FM were running NPR programing in the Rio Grande Valley.
Now the stations are longer part of NPR, 88 FM radio presenter Mario Muñoz has moved over to The Rio Grande Guardian, with Torres joining him to offer expert tax advice.
Torres’ analysis has been in great demand since Congress announced it would be sending out stimulus checks to all American adults.
