We depend on the government for protection against our enemies both foreign and domestic. We depend on the government to educate our children from kindergarten to college. We depend on our government to provide equal protection under the law.
How well did the government protect us on January 6th? How well has the government educated our children especially in the intercity or rural America?
How well did the government provide equal protection to George Floyd, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, and countless others who were too poor, too black, or too gay to merit consideration?
As long the government is mortals it will disappoint as it tries to protect us. Our children will be undereducated as they attend underfunded schools. Citizens will be deprived of their rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The government will pass laws restricting voting while maintaining the filibuster a throwback to the days of Jim Crow which seems to be still alive and kicking.
The prophet Isaiah speaks of an Israelite government just as corrupt, just as dangerous, and just as ineffective as our government today.
Into this dark time, Isaiah shines a light as he describes the reign of a righteous King. For unto us a child is born unto us a son has been given. The government will be on his shoulders. No more will the government be unjust, unfair, and unresponsive.
Instead, the government will be on the shoulders of a Wonderful Counselor, a Mighty God, an Everlasting Father, a Prince of Peace.
During this Advent season as we celebrate the birth of Jesus let us look forward to his coming again.
Let us look forward to as Isaiah has told us to the reestablishment of the throne of David upheld by justice and righteousness.
In the meantime, before Jesus comes again let us have within in us the zeal of the Lord of host to call out injustice when we see it, to march for freedom, and to live with the confidence that trouble don’t last always because help is on the way for unto us a child has been born.
