Things were not looking good for the followers of the early church.  Acts chapter 12 opens with an account of King Herod violent rampage of the Christian community.  James the brother of John was killed, and Peter was seized and put in prison.

With four squads of soldiers guarding him Peter was set to be given to the Jews who were pleased with the death of James.  They wanted more blood and were willing to wait into after the Passover to get their hands on Peter.   The church prayed fervently to God for help.

The night before he was to be turned over Peter bound by two chains, sleeping between two soldiers with guards at the front door keeping watch over the prison was awaken by an angel of the Lord.   Appearing suddenly the angle tapped Peter on the side a light shone in the previous darken cell.  The chains fell off his wrists and the angel said to Peter “Fasten your belt and put on your sandals.” Wrap your around you and follow me.”   The prayers of the church were answered, Peter was free.

For the disciples of the early church and we the disciples of the church today the message of  Act 12 echoes the message of Psalm 34:17 which says when the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.

In these times of bank failures, climate change and personal difficulties we can’t do it alone God is willing ready and able to answer our prayer.
