Do you remember the last time that you were amazed? Perhaps you were amazed by a performance in a movie, or you were amazed by something that happen in a sporting event, or you were amazed by the wonder of a child. With the pandemic, the death of George Floyd, severe weather everywhere amazement has been replaced with dread, sorrow and even disbelief.
Dread, sorrow, and disbelief were probably the feelings of the disciples of Jesus. He had entered Jerusalem a hero, with shouts of “Hosanna”, but now Jesus was dead. Crucified on a cross and laid in a tomb.
At early dawn Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James and other women came to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus. Entering the tomb, they did not find the body instead an angel of the said that he had risen.
Rushing from the tomb the women told the disciples, their tale was met with disbelief. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; he looked in saw the linen cloths and the empty tomb and went home amazed by what had happened.
As we celebrate this Holy week, we will feel dread when we recall how Jesus was arrested. We will fell sorrow as our Lord is beaten and mocked, and we will be in disbelief as Jesus the Son of God is crucified.
However, the dread, sorrow and disbelief of this Holy Week will turn into joy and amazement when we look into the empty tomb. So, be amazed this Holy Week as we continue to look into the empty tomb.
